How Is Scoliosis Assessed and Diagnosed?

Scoliosis is a condition where the spine curves sideways and rotates, causing changes in posture and body symmetry. Early assessment of scoliosis is important, especially in children and adolescents during growth spurts, as timely intervention can help prevent progression of the curve.

How Is Scoliosis Assessed?

Scoliosis is often diagnosed through a combination of methods, including observation, physical assessment, and X-Rays depending on the severity of the condition. Physiotherapists can help with early detection and monitoring of scoliosis. During an assessment, we look for signs such as:

  • Rotation of the spine
  • Uneven shoulders or hips
  • Prominent shoulder blade or rib hump
  • Asymmetry of the waist or trunk
  • Changes in overall posture and balance

Specific tests and tools may be used, including:

  • Adam’s Forward Bend Test, which helps us visually trace the spine from head to pelvis, and identify asymmetries such as rib humps and trunk rotation.
  • Scoliometers and posture assessment charts to measure trunk rotation and monitor changes over time.
  • Photographs and postural observations to track progression.

How Is Scoliosis Diagnosed?

While a physical assessment can strongly suggest scoliosis, the diagnosis is confirmed with an X-ray. The degree of curvature is measured using the Cobb angle:

  • Less than 10°: Not considered scoliosis.
  • Greater than 10°: Meets the definition of scoliosis.

The Cobb angle also helps determine the severity of the curve and guides treatment decisions.

How Can Physiotherapy Help?

Physiotherapists are trained to assess and manage scoliosis and can help by:

  • Detecting signs of scoliosis early.
  • Using specific tools and scoliosis charts to monitor progression.
  • Providing posture and movement assessments.
  • Prescribing specific exercises to improve strength, endurance, mobility, and posture.
  • Referring for X-rays or specialist review when required.
  • Working with GPs and orthopaedic specialists to ensure appropriate management.
