What’s The Difference Between Regular Pilates And Clinical Pilates?

Thinking of joining Clinical Pilates but not sure if it’s right for you?

Read this blog to determine whether you would be a good fit.

Joseph Pilates, the founder of Pilates, famously quoted;

“Change happens through movement and movement heals.

He encouraged his followers to use the mind to control muscles and focus attention on core postural muscles, which would help to improve physical fitness. Since Joseph Pilates started teaching in the 1920s, our understanding of the human body has considerably developed. This has allowed the application of the Pilates Method to also evolve over time. In modern day society, the Pilates Method can now be used to rehabilitate injured clients to achieve their desired goals. This is also known as ‘Clinical Pilates.’ Here we explore the differences in more detail.

1. Tailored To Each Client

Each client will have a 1-to-1 Free Initial Assessment with a clinician to determine their goals, previous history and physical capacity. Following from this, each session will be individualised to ensure you are reaching your personal and rehabilitation targets. So, whether it is an injury you are recovering from, general aches and pains or simply wanting to improve your core strength, Clinical Pilates can help you.

2. Focused On Technique

Here at Unique Physio, Clinical Pilates classes are run by either our lovely physiotherapists or exercise physiologist. With only a maximum number of four clients per class, it allows the clinician to supervise each exercise that has been prescribed. Therefore, clients learn proper form to avoid injuries, maximise results and develop control and awareness of their movements for better coordination and balance.

3. Equipment Based

Our classes centre around using the reformer and trapeze apparatus to allow a unique way of exercising. The reformer is known for its versatility and therefore can help to target different muscle groups. The trapeze table provides different attachment points for springs, pulleys and resistance bands. These features enable beginner level exercises and advanced level exercises meaning that there is an endless number of exercises possible on the trapeze table. This specialised equipment adds variety and challenge, enables focus on specific muscles and allows safe progressions, even with physical limitations.

Clinical Pilates is a type of exercise that incorporates both physical activity and knowledge of the human anatomy. This combination supports the rehabilitation of people with injuries, chronic pain and reduced mobility.

If you’re looking for a way to exercise in a low-stress manner yet to still achieve fantastic results, then Clinical Pilates could be for you. However, it is essential that an assessment is completed prior to commencing Clinical Pilates to assess your condition and establish clear, person-oriented goals. With this, and supervision of a trained professional, Clinical Pilates has the potential to get you one step closer to the ‘first requisite of happiness.’

first requisite of happiness.’
