Wrist Pain Near Your Thumb: Causes, Treatment & Physio Options

Noticing pain on the thumb side of your wrist when opening jars, lifting objects, or even scrolling on your phone?

You’re not alone. This type of pain is commonly associated with De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, a condition affecting the tendons responsible for thumb movement.

What can cause the pain?

De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is often linked to repetitive hand and wrist movements, particularly when the thumb is used frequently. Everyday activities such as lifting a baby, carrying shopping bags, prolonged phone use, or gripping gym equipment can all contribute. It may also develop after a sudden increase in activity.

New parents are commonly affected, as frequent lifting, feeding, and holding of an infant can place the wrist in sustained or awkward positions, especially when fatigue is a factor. For this reason, the condition is sometimes referred to as “mum wrist” or “mommy thumb.” Pregnancy and the postpartum period may also increase the likelihood of symptoms due to hormonal changes and fluid retention.

Common symptoms to look for

The most common symptom is pain on the thumb side of the wrist. This may develop gradually or present suddenly, and can sometimes radiate into the forearm.

You may also notice pain when gripping or opening jars, discomfort when lifting even light objects, and swelling near the base of the thumb. Some people experience a catching, clicking, or creaking sensation with movement, along with stiffness or reduced thumb mobility.

How is it diagnosed?

Diagnosis is based on a clinical assessment of your wrist and thumb. This typically involves observing movement, assessing muscle and tendon function, and performing specific clinical tests such as the Finkelstein test, which can help indicate De Quervain’s tenosynovitis.

It is important not to self-diagnose, as not all thumb-side wrist pain has the same cause. Conditions such as osteoarthritis, ligament sprains, fractures, or other tendon-related issues can present with similar symptoms. A thorough assessment ensures appropriate management.

How is it treated?

Management usually begins with conservative treatment aimed at reducing irritation and restoring movement. This may involve modifying aggravating activities, short-term use of a thumb splint, and strategies such as ice or anti-inflammatory support where appropriate.

As symptoms settle, a structured rehabilitation program is introduced to improve movement, strength, and stability. With early intervention, many individuals experience improvement within 4 to 6 weeks.

If symptoms persist, further management options may be considered, including referral for hand therapy, corticosteroid injection, or, in more persistent cases, surgical review.

When to seek help

If these symptoms sound familiar, it is recommended to seek assessment early.

The team at Unique Physio can assess your wrist, confirm the diagnosis, and guide you through an appropriate treatment plan to support your recovery.
