Is It Safe To Do Pilates While Pregnant?

Are you wondering if Pilates is safe to do whilst pregnant?

Thinking of giving it a try but someone is telling you ‘no’?

Common misconceptions during pregnancy are that you should not start a new workout or you should stop your normal exercise routine.

These are MYTHS! It is, in fact, highly recommended to stay physically active during pregnancy in order to maintain or improve your body’s strength, mobility/flexibility and fitness levels. This can be done through a wide range of exercises and sports, including Pilates.

Read on to find out the benefits of Pilates during pregnancy and how Pilates can be tailored just for you.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

We must remember that the body goes through many changes during pregnancy. This not only includes changes in weight and size, but also other changes, such as posture, hormones, joint stability. For many women, this can cause issues such as pain, swelling and poor mobility. Therefore, it is extremely important to keep the body as mobile, strong, and stable as possible.

Pilates is a popular exercise option that can help us achieve these things, as it targets a variety of physical characteristics, including as strength, stability, mobility, and balance. For some people, Pilates can be a more comfortable option during pregnancy as the exercises do not require high impact movements on the body as other exercises (such as jogging, tennis) may involve.

Pilates is also a great option during pregnancy as it can be easily modified to accommodate people at different exercise levels and different stages of pregnancy. For someone who is new to Pilates and exercise, we can always start with beginner-level exercises and progress gradually at their pace.

Pilates is not just limited to exercises in standing or on your back. It can be done in multiple positions which may make it easier, safer, or more comfortable for someone who is pregnant. In addition to mat-based exercises, Pilates can also be performed on a range of equipment, such as the Reformer and Trapeze Table, which can add variety to the program or allow for exercise modifications to suit the person better.
