Stress Urinary Incontinence

Stress incontinence is described as a form of Urinary Incontinence. This is where someone may experience incontinence during some or all of the following activities:

  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Weight lifting
  • Running
  • Jumping
  • High impact training

Several factors can contribute to stress urinary incontinence, including hormonal changes, excessive strain during childbirth, and increased weight. Some additional contributing factors or considered causes can be seen below:

  • Menopause
  • Child-birth
  • Pregnancy
  • Obesity
  • Constipation
  • Asthma
  • Diabetes

These elements can put significant pressure on the ligaments and muscles supporting the pelvic floor, leading to their weakening and stretching. As a result, the support for the pelvic floor diminishes, increasing the risk of incontinence.

During physical activities, the pressure exerted on the pelvic floor often surpasses the strength of the pelvic floor muscles, which can cause urine leakage. This condition can impact your daily life and confidence, particularly during exercise or even routine actions like sneezing or coughing.

Fortunately, there are various effective treatments available for stress urinary incontinence that can help you regain your confidence.
